The wind was picking up as the sun began to set; dust kicked up about the badlands. Blitz shuddered as that same dust coated her short fur. She growled, her eyes fluttering open as she was startled awake. Damn dust, she thought as she struggled onto her paws. She shook herself off, a cascade of dusk settling around her, the cloud blowing away.
She looked back, remembering the long walk it took to get herself here. After her humans disappeared, she was reduced to finding her own way. She had no idea where she was, but out in the badlands...it was a desert. Only thing on her mind was food and water. She needed a town, she wasn't far away, another hour or so.
With the setting sun, the heat no longer was wearing her down. The lovely dust bath had kept her cooler in the sun. Hurry, hurry; She jogged, finally catching on the roadway toward the next town. Everything was dilapidate, old, and ruined. Even the humans around weren't anything special.
Water and food...Food and water, she thought as she passed through the huge walls from the town's border. Must have been to keep the dust at bay. Her tail swayed back and forth a moment before she took to a small hill. She sat down, checking to ensure there wasn't a guard to catch her or keep her out. If only there was somewhere for just dogs like her, a paradise where all of them could live in peace. It was a pipe dream, something spoken among many, but along side her humans was paradise one time. Not anymore.
She sneaks past the front passage; walking past a small market. People were shopping, she took the opportunity to snag a trail of sausage hanging from a vendor. She scampered off, finding the first alleyway and curling up against a crate. She had a meal, if only water would be that much easier.

The faint sound of dripping could be heard down the alleyway from where the female dog was at. Down the alleyway you could also hear the faint sound of lapping from what appeared to be another dog getting a well deserved drink from a leaking water bucket down the ally behind some store that was mostly used inside the store for cooking and stuff, but was store in the back of the ally to try to keep cool. But it didn't matter to the tall yellow lab who looked well feed, but this was mostly because he was a good hunter and knew how to catch his food. His human had died a year or so ago and since then he had been on his own out in this cruel world. Which he had made a lot of weird friends along the way....let alone some pretty interesting enemy's.

Blitzen's ears perked up as she heard a drip. She had a sausage in her mouth, scarfing it down as she realized the drip wasn't a hallucination. She collected the left over sausages in her mouth and made her way further down the alleyway. She got a few more feet when she heard the water moving. She caught sight of another dog and she froze, her paw up before she could take another step.
Another dog, she thought as she took in the size of the yellow lab before her. He was bigger than her, but what she wanted was. Well, his. She did have the sausages though, maybe she could barter the sausages for some water. She was rather lean with the lack of meals, in her travels there hadn't been enough to actually hunt. These towns were a lot more satisfying when it came to food and water than the wilderness-well lack there of.
She got a couple more feet forward and dropped the sausages in front of her. As much as she would push in, she wanted to ask. She barked, unsure if he was friendly or not. The scent of male was heavy around her, maybe this was his territory? Then again he might not be the only one near by.

Timber had been to into his drinking to hear the female dog creep up on him before he had jumped slightly at the bark which had caught him off guard. He turned his head and glanced over at the dog and his eyes had went straight from her to the sausage that laid at her feet. ~Hmm who is this~He thought to himself since he had never seen her around here before. He tilted his head to the side and licked his lips of the excess water he had there before walking towards her. Only stopping a couple or so feet from her. "Oh hello there.....didn't hear you coming"He said, but he then took notice at how thin she seemed and he had to guess she came from beyond the great wall around the city and figured she had been out in the harsh elements and needed some refreshments. Though he didn't want to give up this water. He understood that she needed it more then him.

~I scared him?~ Blitzen was a little confused, she hadn't snuck up on another dog before. She cocked her head to the side, ears lifting as she tried to look friendly. God, what was she supposed to say to that? Oh yeah, "Sorry, I didn't mean to startle you." She admitted as she rose onto her feet again. She eyed the water and then him. He's so big, but I'm so thirsty. She nudged the sausages toward him, laying on the ground submissively to gain some brownie points.
"Care to trade these for some water?" She asked, remembering the horrible bartering she had to deal with a few towns back. She'd been hustled out of a nice brick of cheese for bread she'd snagged off of a nice human. There was a relief that there was only one dog here. Would staying in this town grant her a spot like this? Her tail thumped patiently fighting the urge to pounce as the water dripped again.

"Oh it's fine no big deal right"Timber said and seemed to smile at her then eyed the sausage.'"I just have one from that lot you have...you can keep the rest...and I don't mind at all go ahead...you must be thirsty after being out beyond the wall....how long have you traveled out in that harsh weather?"He asked her curiously as his own tail wagged slightly glad that this female was nice. Then again most around here grew up with a tough life so wasn't as friendly as some would of hoped for,but he didn't mind he understood. He was even luck enough to claim this part of town, but trying to keep it from being taken from him was a great and difficult challenge for he didn't like to be mean to others, but you got to do what you got to do ...and he was completely per paired to protect what he claimed with his life.....now...asking was another story ...one he didn't mind sharing with .

"Thank you," She breathed, carrying the links over and dropping them beside Timber. She didn't mind if he ate more than the one he asked for. She had been cheated before and was glad she ate what she could before the water took her mind for another go at survival. "I've been out there for about four days," She said as she dipped her muzzle into the water a moment to feel the cold then started drinking.
As much as the weather outside the cities were bad, there was a way to survive and if you of course followed the alpha's in whatever territory you found yourself in, you could get by. She was used to falling into traps or back-stabbing deals with her trusting nature. Her expectations for others proven right now as the yellow lab let her have water.
She pulled away from the bucket as a drop of water hit her head and she looked back at Timber. She could have drained the whole bucket, but the memory of his generous offer of taking only a fraction of her food had sated the desire to take it all. "Are you a traveller, too?" She asked, making sure she was talking to the right dog.

"Four days that's kinda harsh....the weather is horrible out there"Timber added and took only one of the sausage links though he preferred more, but he knew she needed it more then him so he kept his end of the deal.
"Traveler not really.I mean I used to before I found this city, but since the hunting is good within theses walls and I found theses water barrels my life has been pretty good.Though I do admit you can at a kinda bad time....some turf wars been going on for claim over the water areas and the food areas and I am kinda in the middle of it all...I just want to be left in peace, but some are just so demanding about everything and I don't stand for that stuff.....was in a dog pack once, but .....was kinda driven out by a brutal wolf pack"He admitted."Anyways names Timber...whats yours?"He asked curiously.

"It's not too bad, I've gotten used to being on the move," Blitzen mentioned as she sat beside him, taking another link of sausage for herself. She stretched suddenly, forgetting that she wasn't on her own. She never dropped her guard usually, but there was something about this dog that made her do it.
"My name is Blitzen," She said easily and looked down the alleyway. Turf wars, she remembered those, almost a prize in one of those fights until she escaped. She left her pack as well and never looked back. "Dog packs are a pain in the tail, they always try to take everything from me. You've actually been the kindest I've dealt with. Usually whoever I deal with try to hustle everything from me. It's nice to meet you."

"Hmm so your mostly a traveler I see"Timber added."Nice to meet you Blitzen and well my pack was pretty ok,but.....I never looked at myself as a pack dog....It was always me and my owner...until he died in a horrible car accident...and then I was left to fend for myself and pick up the pieces on my own....so it's a good thing I was a hunting dog and knew hoe to hunt certain animals to survive. Though some prove more tricky to catch then others"He admitted.
"Sorry you haven't had much luck with pack life "He added.

"Your owner died? That's terrible," Blitzen uttered as she lowered her head. "My owner..." She struggled to get the words out. Although his owner passed away, it sounded like they had a great relationship, it made sense why he'd become more of a home body. She wasn't so lucky, "She tied me to a tree and just walked away."
Blitzen lifted her head again, looking at the sky so she wouldn't cry. If she knew what she'd done wrong, maybe she'd still have a home. She didn't understand, but her owner just left. "I've been like you I guess, fending for myself. I've hunted, but most of the time the buzzards take it or another dog pack. It's been weird." She said again as she rose her ears. "Would you call this place paradise?"

"Yeah ,but it happened and I will miss him"He said and then listened to her story which sounded worse then hers. "I am sorry to hear that....humans can be so.....stupid sometimes..."He said wondering how she got away from being tied up. Mabe the rope or chain snapped after awhile.
"Yeah dog packs can surely make a single dogs life hell......though some should learn to help others rather then just being a whole dog eat dog world....thing..."He added"I don't think I would call it a paradise, but it's close enough"He said with a slight smile on his face. "Anyways....maybe we should team up....two dogs are better then one....at least from the other packs and stuff around here."He suggested.

"You're right, it happened and it's done. I'm not that upset, I must have been too much for her; but I slipped my collar luckily. Humans are so strange," She tried to make a better situation of her past as she rose to her feet. Just couldn't keep still, not used to it at all. If I joined him, did that mean we just stayed here? I did want something more, she thought. Her tail rose as she looked up at the buildings around her. "Do you plan on staying here? You'd like me to help you keep your territory?" She asked, not used to sitting in one place for long.
"I've never had a place to really call my own before." She admitted as she moved a little closer to him. As much as she knew she should show submission, she wasn't an alpha dog. She'd always been a follower and it didn't help that she was alone. She could handle on her own, but if someone would challenge her, she'd probably give in. It was something she loathed, but couldn't escape from.

"Hmm probably who knows...."Timber said as he watched her. It felt nice to have someone else around to talk to that was nice rather then a push over or someone trying to take your stuff. But when she asked about him wanting her to stay here and help protect his territory he nodded slightly."Eh just for a little while...I might move later one,but for now I got a nice thing going here...."He added.
"I understand..,but it's nice to try.....and don't worry I wont let anyone hurt you here..or at least do my best to keep that from happening."He said and watched as she moved closer to him.Which he didn't mind at all he was used to hyper pups every once in awhile.

"So, what are the ground rules here? Are the hairless monkeys as dumb here as other places?" Blitzen tried to make a joke, but she was usually bad at it. Humans were a conundrum to her. Some were nice, some were mean, most wanted her to shoo. She was glad to have Timber welcome her here. "I think I could stay. Yes, I'd like to stay." Her tail was waging from side to side. She had a place to sleep. Hell she had a friend.
"What do you consider fun in the city? I usually like lizard toss, but then I'd be playing with food." She blurted as she wondered if there was a lot to see out here. She hadn't actually run into another dog other than Timber. He must be really good at protecting his territory.

"Eh not really any ground rules mostly just avoid the ones that like their up to no good and be wary of other dogs around here some are not that nice...and well...I don't really have any here...just never enter a store no bad how badly hungry you are ok...and try not to steal food...the humans get annoyed and might shot you."He added.
"And fun I like casing some of the birds off and hunting....never really thought of it before."Timber said feeling a bit embarrassed by not really having an answer for her/

"Oops," Blitzen blurted as she remembered she'd stolen the sausage links not even ten minutes ago. So no stealing, got to remember that one. Her tail twitched as she scarfed another portion of meat and then recovered. She looked at the bucket of water, the droplets still dripping. She stretched for a moment and then righted herself. A flock of birds flew over head, disturbed by something nearby.
"Someone must be chasing bird now, those ones are flying rather suddenly." She continued and got onto her paws. She wanted to see what got the birds started. "Can we go check it out, we'll find fun somewhere, right?"

"Oh it's ok it's more of a guideline really....humans don't like stealing and there selfish bastards who need to get fatter"He teased her as his ears perked up to the sound of birds flying off suddenly as if someone was chasing them or someone was coming there way...
"Well look like someone is near by...and sure why not"He said as his tail wagged behind him excited for a bit of excitement for once....it had been to quiet lately which he couldn't complain so he hoped whatever this would...would be fun.

Blitzen lifted her nose, inhaling deeply as she jogged down the alleyway. She couldn't just smell the birds, but something stronger that made her belly rumble and her chest flutter. I know that smell, she thought and that just pushed her faster. "Cats!" She cried out as she broke into the clearing. The snarling hisses erupted as the cats were scared from the surprise. Blitzen chased after a couple of them playfully, but they weren't happy.
"Timber, they're cats!" She squealed with glee. She hadn't played around with cats in ages. Then again, it didn't occur to her that they didn't want to play. In a couple of the towns she'd visited the cats were friendly.

"Wait...wait..."Timber said bounding towards her. "Just make sure you don't hurt any of them or the humans might get mad...they keep the mouse and rodents out"He said glad she was enjoying herself, but there was a lot of rules in this time mostly the humans had a lot and he didn't want to ruin it and be shot or kicked out or anything, but as long as they didn't hurt or kill a cat he guessed he could join in.
Wagging his tail he bounded after a couple.
